about
Ricardo Archuleta of Cerro, New Mexico sang this song on August 4, 1940 for Juan B. Rael, whose collection of field recordings is available from the Library of Congress.
Sr. Archuleta was a masterful singer of the Penitente tradition, and most of his contributions to the archives are Alabados and songs from religious folk dramas.
"El Tecolotito" is sung in so many diverse versions in Northern New Mexico that it almost constitutes a genre of its own.
With sisters Lia Martínez and Shae Fiol (vocals).
lyrics
Tecolote 'e 'onde viene'?
Del pueblo del colorido, cu
Vengo a trae'te la noticia
Que tu amor está perdido, cu
Little Owl, where did you come from?
From the village of Colorido, coo
I come bringing you the news
That your love is lost, coo
Pájaro cu, cu, cu
Pobrecito animalito
Tiene hambre el tecolotito, cu
Hoot-owl, poor animal
The little owl is hungry, coo
Tecolotito valiente, que canta'tes en enero, cu
Por qué no se juntan todos y hacen un tecolotero? cu
Brave little owl, you who sang in January, coo
Why don't we all get together to build a nest? coo
Tecolotito valiente, que canta'tes en abril, cu
Brave little owl, you who sang in April, coo

Great choice of music, expertly played and sung. Nicely produced. I hope to see The Onlies live, asap. This is an album I listen to over and over. Karamogo
Powerful collection rooted in the stories that must be re-told. Played by some of the most generous community music people I’ve met during my foray into Old Time music.
This CD is a keeper! Ellen B. (Elly) Marshall
This rendition of Virgil Anderson's "Jenny Hang the Kettle On" is wonderful. It perfectly grabs the simplistic beauty of Virgil's version, but has such clarity. Amazing album! Payton Scott
Ken Landreth is one of my favorite banjo players of all time. This whole album is amazing! Makes me miss those hot sunny days in the Mt. Airy flatlands watching these guys shred. altacke
