about

Composed by Abundio Martínez (Hidalgo, Mexico, late 1800's). We learned this version from el Dueto Amistad, a bajo sexto/fiddle duet who crossed the border from Sabinas, Coahuila, Mexico to San Antonio, Texas to record in the late '60s. They played a beautiful older style of Northern/Central Mexican violin music that survived from the days of the orquestas, full of valses, chotis, and pasos dobles. Much of their repertoire is rooted in a creative period of fusion between regional folk and European classical music that arrived with French cultural influence in Mexico in the 1860's. The style was already old and rare when they recorded in San Antonio.
