about

The Purépecha people live in highland Michoacán around Lake Pátzcuaro, uphill from the mestizo communities that play son planeco (or arpa grande), which is also a double-fiddle tradition. They must have picked up the approach from visits to the lowland communities, since they call their version son abajeño (son from down-there). In addition to son abajeño the Purépecha also have a brass band tradition and a beautiful song form called the pirekua, which is usually performed by two guitars and high harmony vocals.

Don Pedro is a Purépecha elder and activist who has worked to promote and preserve son abajeño, and has composed many sones of his own which have become standards of the traditional repertoire. El Borrachito is one of his compositions. We first learned it from a recording we were given by Scott Mathis of Albuquerque, who made friends with don Pedro while travelling in Mexico, and Jordan later travelled to Morelia, Michoacan to learn more from Pedro and his family.
