about
Composed by New Mexico legend Antonia Apodaca of Rociada, NM
Antonia was born in Rociada, New Mexico in 1923. Her parents, José Damacio Martinez and Rafaelita Suazo Martinez, were both musicians who came from musical families, and both also composed their own songs in addition to the traditional repertoire they inherited. Although Tonie was friends with don Santiago Jiménez, Sr., who pioneered the modern Tejano style of accordion, she has maintained her own sound which is distinctly New Mexican and distinctly her own. Her perspective as a musician is incredibly broad and embraces the diversity of the cultural experience of native New Mexicans in the past century; her repertoire reflects this and includes includes dance tunes, wedding marches, and songs from the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico, honky tonk, western fiddle waltzes and jigs, early rock and roll, northern Mexican music, Texas conjunto, swing tunes, and pop. Tonie now lives in an assisted-living apartment in Albuquerque where she can be closer to her son Jose.
lyrics

Powerful collection rooted in the stories that must be re-told. Played by some of the most generous community music people I’ve met during my foray into Old Time music.
This CD is a keeper! Ellen B. (Elly) Marshall

Half intrigue, half genericity. Very David Toop's Ocean of Sound re-appropriated for a fancy diplomatic dinner party, where quaintness has its respect. Not an easy mood to tap into as a casual listener. OQ
