about

A polka from the repertoire of Los Paisanos de Santa Fe. The voice before the track is Antonio Rivera, who was the mandolinist of Los Paisanos.

For a period in the 1960s, Los Paisanos de Santa Fe played every Sunday afternoon on the bandstand on the plaza of Santa Fe. Their sound was in part defined by the mandolin of Antonio Rivera and the violin of Jose Medina, who played the New Mexican dance tunes in harmony and with a sophisticated phrasing that showed a touch of swing influence. Another verion of this tune was also recorded as Días Felices by the blind fiddler El Ciego Melquíades from San Antonio, TX in the 1930s, and released by Arhoolie Records on the album "San Antonio Dance Party." We were given this recording by santafesino mandolinist Tomás Maes, a cousin of Antonio's, who lives in El Dorado and still plays much of the Paisanos' repertoire.
