about

This polka was played by Librado Leyba and Eddie ‘Lalo’ Ortiz in 1950 and recorded by John Donald Robb, part of an excellent set of fiddle and guitar duets included in his archive. They played it in the keys of F and C, calling the tune “Los Muy Buenos Días”; Cleofes Ortiz played a different variant of the tune in the key of D that he called “La Favorita.”

We close out the album with a farewell in décima form, written by Jordan and recited by Roberto Mondragón. The décima is a ten-line form of poetry that has long been popular in New Mexico. In other parts of the Spanish-speaking world it’s combined with regional musical forms; though we had never heard a traditional example of this in New Mexico, we took inspiration from a variety of other regions to create a new performance model for décimas in a traditional Norteño musical context.

lyrics

The tunes that we just played
Are rich tradition of the New Mexican North.
They've been traded back and forth
since before the borders were made.
They're woven together like a braid
of voices in ancestral conversation
who speak to us of our situation
and remind us of who we are.
So let's crank up the volume a todo dar
pa' darle vuelo for another generation.
