2. La Entrega de las Canciones (Entrega)
Entregas (or 'entriegas') are ritual songs sung in Northern New Mexico for a variety of community occasions, but especially for weddings, in the form of 'La Entrega de los Novios.' Each entrega is different, but the entregador generally starts by asking permission to deliver his or her song, sings some verses explaining the significance of the event going on, some that offer advice to the couple for a good marriage, and then a long section of verses that honor the individuals present; sometimes entregas can last 40 minutes to an hour. According to Cipriano Vigil, who performed the entrega for Noah and Lia’s wedding, in some periods in the Norte when priests were scarce the entrega was enough to wed a couple in the eyes of the community, and their bond wasn’t official until the entrega was sung.
Roberto Mondragón is one of a few entregadores who are still regularly called upon to compose original verses for weddings in New Mexico. Aside from continuing his family’s music tradition, he is well known across the state for his service to the community as lieutenant governor, his ongoing work in support of the rights of Northern New Mexicans, and his involvement in bilingual education. It’s an honor for us to have his participation on this album, for which he composed the first ever "Entrega de Canciones del Disco", an entrega of songs on an album. His coplas explain the richness of music in el Norte and honor each of the musicians that we inherited the tunes from.

Que en nuestra lengua norteña resultó “La Varceliana”.
The varsoviana that originated in Warsaw and Vienna,
That in our norteño dialect came to be called “Varceliana.”
El baile del pasodoble, no es muy re-fácil bailarlo,
Lo tocaron los Ortizes: Maximiliano y el Lalo.
The pasodoble, it’s not a simple dance to do,
It was played by the Ortizes: Maximiliano and Lalo.

Tocaba muy bien las Inditas, las cuales ya hemos bailado.

El Agua Fría y la Grama tocaba Henry Ortiz,
Y tambien Librado Leyba “El Capullo de Alelí.”
