A medley of tunes from the repertoire of Gregorio Ruiz of Pecos, New Mexico. Gregorio called the first tune “La Polka de Eustaquio Ortiz,” but it’s more often called “La Polka ‘e la Suegra” (Mother-in-Law Polka) and is one of the most popular Northern New Mexican polkas. Cleofes Ortiz played a version he called “Mi Suegra Me Aprieta Las Botas” (My Mother-in-Law is Tightening my Boots). The words are original, written on Antonia Apodaca’s urging to take her example and create more “cute, funny songs,” because “why be so serious all the time?” They follow in the theme of Cleofes’ title and the humorous mother-in-law archetype that runs through many old Norteño songs, making light of domestic tensions.
