about

Pasodobles are beautiful and complex tunes, a genre that originated in Spain but is said to have reached its fullest complexity and expression after coming to Mexico. They were played along the border before the accordion came to dominate the South Texas style, and then largely disappeared. We had never heard New Mexican versions of this style until we discovered a home recording on a tape in the Bayou Seco collection. It was made by Maximiliano (violin) and Eddie ‘Lalo’ Ortiz (guitar) sometime in the late ‘70s or early ‘80s, and among the norteño polkas, chotises, and swing tunes are a few expertly played pasos dobles, including this one. We’re not sure what they called it, but we’ve found other versions in the Frontera Collection, an archive of Borderlands recordings from the 1930s, in which it’s called ‘Once Ochenta y Uno’.
