A polka from the repertoire of Gregorio Ruiz of Pecos, NM. Part of Gregorio’s unique sound came from a technique of tuning the violin much lower than the current standard; he tuned the strings to Eb/Bb/F/C. When he played in regular G position, the tune sounded in Eb, and so he had the guitar players tune down their instruments a half-step and play in E position to match. For this track we tuned our instruments according to his system.

The first section of the tune uses the old major/minor mode (see track 3), and the second section seems to be a New-Mexicanized version of the refrain of the classic American fiddle tune “Turkey in the Straw”.
